Five ways to make CPD count this year

If you're looking to make your CPD really count this year, consider these recommendations from Lee Haywood, our Education and Training Officer:

 

1. Make Continuing Professional Development (CPD) a business objective. This is a profession that is constantly evolving and nobody can rest on a qualification they gained years (or decades) ago. CPD enables you to keep your professional knowledge up-to-date, grow your areas of expertise, and stay at the forefront of the industry. You almost certainly review your business and client activity constantly, but how often does CPD come into consideration? Make time for professional development and see the value it adds, both to you as a professional and to your business.

2. Don’t pay double when you don’t need to. You can access our CPD content – seminars, webinars and abundant resources – as part of your membership, so you need not buy in expensive external CPD for your practice on top of this. The training package we provide our members for free would cost in the region of £1,000 to purchase, so we encourage you to make full use of it.

3. Spread CPD across the year rather than delaying it. You need to achieve 30 hours of CPD to be a practicing member and with the demands of a busy job; we understand how this might end up getting put off until the 11th hour. We run seminars across the regions throughout the year, which are free to attend. These offer fascinating guest speakers and provide a chance to network. 4. Challenge yourself in 2015 with 2020. We recently partnered with training provider, 2020 Innovation, which means you now have access to the complete catalogue of online webinars as they get released. There will be a real variety of topics, including the standard modules on money laundering, tax updates, PAYE, as you would expect, but there will also be topics you might be less familiar with. With a wealth of training resources to support you, use this as a chance to develop in areas outside of your ‘comfort zone’. You never know what benefits this could bring you or doors it may open.

5. Be a better team player. Yes, CPD is about your own professional development but if you invest the time and effort in developing yourself, it can have positive knock-on effects in the workplace. What knowledge could you share with colleagues and clients? Could you help mentor colleagues or juniors as a result? Consider how it could help you advance, manage and lead. Gaining skills and experience has a big role to play in job satisfaction and we urge you to make it a focus for 2015.
